What Causes Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation occurs when specialized cells in the skin called melanocytes produce too much melanin—the pigment that gives skin its color. Common types include:
- Melasma: Symmetrical, dark brown patches on the cheeks and forehead, often triggered by UV exposure and hormonal shifts.
- Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): Dark spots left behind after acne blemishes or skin injuries heal.
- Sun Spots (Solar Lentigines): Flat brown spots caused by long-term UV exposure.
Dermatological Treatments
- Medical Topicals: Tyrosinase inhibitors containing Kojic Acid, Azelaic Acid, or Arbutin to control melanin production.
- Targeted Chemical Peels: Graded peels to exfoliate pigmented skin cells quickly.
